How to still use Popcorn Time

The official Popcorn Time website and back end is down, maybe for good, but if you’ve already got the software installed you can still use it with these minor “hacks”.

Popcorn Time relies on the Bittorrent network and third party torrent indexing sites for content and while popcorntime.io isn’t running at the moment, torrenting is working just fine. All you need to do to continue using the Popcorn Time software is to help the otherwise automated processes out a bit.

If you don’t want to bother with any of this the unofficial Popcorn Time fork Time4popcorn works just fine. It even has an app for iOS!

Continue watching TV shows with Popcorn Time

This is a really easy fix and the end result is almost identical to you’re used to see in the Popcorn Time TV shows section. The only differences are that the shows are sorted a bit different and don’t come with a rating.

What you need to do to make it work is to go to Settings (the cog symbol in the upper right corner of the interface), enable Show advanced settings, scroll down to Connection (left column) and change the TV Show API Endpoint to http://eztvapi.co.za/.

Go to Settings > Connection and change the TV Show API Endpoint

Go to Settings > Connection and change the TV Show API Endpoint

This tells Popcorn Time where to look for the TV show content and the URL above is a working mirror of the default location.

Manual torrent search for both TV shows and movies

Unfortunately there’s not a similar fix for the movie section but it’s still very easy to watch movies in Popcorn Time simply by searching for them manually. The method also works for TV shows in case you don’t feel like bothering with changing the settings.

What you need to do is to head over to the manual search feature that for some reason has been hidden very well despite being very useful. It’s accessed by clicking the folder icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Access the manual torrent search feature by clicking the folder icon.

Access the manual torrent search feature by clicking the folder icon (third from the right).

Here you’re met with a few options regarding your impending torrent search: Furthest to the left you need to choose between searching Strike or KAT. KAT seems to be a bit better than Strike but both work very well. Second you need to choose between searching for movies or TV shows. That part should be self-explanatory.

Last but not least you need to enter the search string of what you’re looking for. Here you can include things like “1080p” if you’re looking for a certain quality or “s03e14” if you’re looking for a particular episode of a TV show (In this case episode 14 of season 3).

Hit enter or click the magnifying glass to perform the search and after a second or two you’ll be presented with a list of torrent files that match the search. From here on there’s nothing left to do but to select one of the listing and hit play.

There’s also an option to drag-and-drop a Magnet link or torrent file which will start the download/playback process right away.
